Leflore County is missing a slew of its road signs — again.
The signs were stolen before, recovered late last year, cleaned and reposted, says Road Manager Jerry Smith.
Their installation was completed last week.
Now, the county is missing a total of 38 numbered county road signs and four named signs that mark Grenada Boulevard, King Circle, Springhill Road and Viking Road.
Seven of these signs were stolen between July 20 and July 26, according to information provided by Smith. County roads 74, 80, 83, 88, 518, 532 and 626 were robbed of the signage during that week.
During a Board of Supervisors meeting Monday, Smith asked that the Sheriff’s Department provide extra surveillance around crossroads to help discourage theft.
The signs are used by the 911 system to direct first responders. The loss of these signs can cause delays that may exacerbate emergency situations.
“We are seeking help from any neighbor driving by. Always call the sheriff and the road department. We’re interested to help save lives,” Smith said.
Stealing 911 emergency signs is a misdemeanor that can result in fines and/or imprisonment and the requirement that the offender replace the sign.
