All the spots for a free cooking course scheduled to begin Monday have filled, but the Mississippi State Extension Service is still gathering the names of those interested in taking future classes.
The “Cooking Matters” classes will be held weekly for six weeks at the Extension Service office, 309 W. Market St.
Anne Marie Gregory, the community wellness planner for the Leflore County Extension Service, said the goal of the program is “ultimately to teach people who are on a budget to make ends meet, healthily.”
Skills that participants will learn include how to handle knives, read food labels, prepare healthy meals and cut up a whole chicken.
Other skills to be taught will include meal planning, grocery shopping and price comparison, food budgeting and nutrition awareness.
After each of the first four classes, students will be able to take home ingredients to practice class recipes.
The class is intended for those who are caregivers of children ages 5 and under, including older teenagers who have the role of caregiver in their families.
“Ideally, it’s parents or caregivers of young children, and we say those ages because it’s shown when you have healthy habits at that age, it continues through to the rest of your life,” Gregory said.
The dates for the next series of classes have not been set, but they will teach the same skills.
