The new concert series promoted by the Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau has been scheduled.
The first event in the series, called “Rhythm on the Rails,” will be held Aug. 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m at Rail Spike Park.
Board member Cyndi Long said at the Tourism Commission’s meeting Monday that the first concert will feature Greenwood’s own Brandice Brown, who will be singing with her band For the Culture.
The series, funded through a $50,000 budget, will hold a musical event on the first Friday of every month.
“We’re all excited,” said Long.
A concert every month is expected to cost around $30,000 of the budget. The remaining money may be used for a larger concert downtown between the bridges but nothing concrete is set.
In other business, Ashley Farmer, interim executive director of the CVB, said the office received a call from a member of Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church regarding litter at the cemetery that features the grave of legendary bluesman Robert Johnson.
Farmer said the church, which is on Money Road near Greenwood, is concerned about tourists leaving trash at the cemetery and asked for advice on who to turn to for help.
Andrew McQueen, board chairman, said he didn’t believe the board had any power to act on its own.
“I would like for us to reach out to see exactly what assistance, what direction, what are they wanting from us before we just dismiss it,” said board member Dorothy Randle.
“We can’t just brush it aside because they may just block the cemetery from being open to the public,” she added.
Farmer was given the green light to engage further with the church to see what direction needs to be taken.
