State Sen. David Jordan says he is still contemplating whether he will run for another term.
Should he choose to run again, he will have a challenger.
Curressia Brown, 57, of Greenwood, is a retired Mississippi Valley State University administrator. She announced her candidacy Friday. She will be running as an independent.
Since 1993, Jordan, a Democrat, has represented District 24, which includes portions of Leflore, Grenada, Holmes, Humphreys and Tallahatchie counties.
Jordan said Friday that he had yet to file qualifying papers for the office and that his concern at the moment is the state of the financially struggling Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
In a release, Brown cited issues such as the preservation of GLH, an “aggressive approach to crime, ensuring safer communities,” and strategies to assist students who had their education disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Jordan, 89, said 30 years in the Senate gives him pause to reflect. He also served 36 years on the Greenwood City Council and was a teacher for more than 30 years.
Still, he has not ruled out running and said he does not worry about having opponents.
“I have an opponent every election,” he said.
Jordan said he was able to talk with Speaker of the House Philip Gunn this week to discuss concerns over the hospital.
