The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District Board has approved the appointment of Charles Brown as the principal of Leflore County High School for the 2022-2023 school year.
The board voted 3-1 in favor of the appointment during a special called meeting Thursday, with Dr. Ro’Shaun Bailey voting no. Board members Dr. Kalanya Moore, Jackie Lewis and Samantha Milton voted yes. Member Magdalene Abraham was not present.
Bailey, who graduated from the Itta Bena school, said, “I certainly have concerns with there not being transparency, especially in District 4,” which he represents.
He also acknowledged the right of the superintendent to select and appoint principals within the district. Brown has been an assistant principal at Greenwood High School since 2018.
“We should at least allow the community stakeholders to have a say in this,” Bailey said.
“We really need the support of the parents and community. ... The parents in the community have expressed a desire for a preferred person who has previously worked at the school and had the students’ and community’s best interests at heart,” Bailey said.
In closed session, the board suspended the salary scale for the curriculum director, district test coordinator, counselor liaison and professional development coordinator for further review.
The board also unanimously approved motions to approve:
- A bid totaling $21,929 for a new district website powered by SchoolinSites. This was the higher of the two bids submitted. The lower bid of $20,216 from CampusSuite apparently included fewer services.
- Contracting with the Leflore County Civic Center for a district convocation Aug. 1.
