The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District Board is considering approval of a grant application that would help buy instruments for the district’s music program.
A grant from the Save the Music Foundation would be used for instruments, a professional development workshop, books, music stands and program support for 10 years. The amount of the grant would depend on the amount of funding available.
The project was presented to the board during a work session Wednesday.
Dr. Likisha Coleman, assistant superintendent, said the music department “has been aggressive” partnering with the Jackson School District to secure the opportunity for their students. This grant would serve grades 3-8 and offer schools the option to include band, strings or mariachi in the music programs for those grades.
Schools have to meet specific requirements to qualify for and keep the grant, but the school district is more than qualified, Coleman said.
The board also discussed a forum to meet the incoming superintendent of the district, James Johnson-Waldington. Johnson-Waldington, who begins his tenure Friday, has previously served as the interim superintendent for the former Leflore County School District. The forum will be held at 7 p.m. July 7 at the Leflore County Civic Center, and the public is invited.
The board originally had planned to vote on the district’s budget for 2022-2023 on Wednesday but delayed action until its regular board meeting next Tuesday.
