One of Greenwood’s longest-tenured firefighters says he’s decided to retire.
“I just think it’s time for me to move on and let some of the younger guys advance themselves up,” said Assistant Chief John Lewis. “I’ve been very fortunate to have gotten this job. It’s helped me and my family to advance our lifestyles. I’m very happy with how my life has turned out working here.”
Lewis, 65, joined the Greenwood Fire Department on Aug. 1, 1979. His last day will be Feb. 28.
He said he didn’t plan to become a firefighter.
“I lived in Baptist Town, and there was a fire station right across the railroad track over there on Pelican Street,” he said. “I used to come by and see the firemen sitting out and washing the truck.”
He originally intended to join the military and then decided to become a diesel mechanic.
Over the years, he worked various jobs, including as a medical assistant at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
At one point, he intended to go to nursing school, but he instead applied to an opening at the Fire Department.
He did not expect to work there for so long, but the job found its way into his heart, he said.
He has been assistant chief for 16 years. His responsibilities include managing the stations and managing the trucks.
On a desk in his office are high stacks of paper. He said they are mostly reports on the status of trucks and needed repairs that he reviews. He also still works in the field and fights fires when the calls come in.
“If we have a call right now, I’m going to get on the truck,” he said. “I’ll direct and make sure everything goes accordingly.”
Since 1979, he has observed plenty of changes in the department. There are more Black firefighters now than when Lewis, who is Black, started.
There is also far more turnover among younger firefighters, though he said there are still those who find the profession appealing enough to make a career out of it.
After retirement, he will continue managing some rental property and repairing items such as refrigerators, air conditioners and vehicles, which he has been doing on the side.
“I’m definitely satisfied with my career,” he said. “I think, like I’ve stated over the years, it’s been a blessing for me to have an opportunity to serve the public. I’ve learned a lot from this job. I’ve seen a lot, and I enjoy what I do. It’s just in my heart.”
Lewis said that he is still hoping to fight more fires before he finally hangs up the boots.
