A Greenwood woman was killed and her boyfriend injured Sunday night when the car she was driving left a sharp curve on Teoc Road and hit a tree.
Elizabeth Floyd, 33, of 1605 Grenada Blvd. was dead when firefighters removed her from her Dodge Neon around 9:45 p.m.
An ambulance transported the passenger, Perry Brown, 36, to Greenwood Leflore Hospital, where he remained in good condition in the intensive care unit this morning.
The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. just inside Leflore County about a half mile from Mississippi 7. Floyd's older sister, Teresa Huggins, said wet conditions caused Floyd to lose control of the car.
"All we know is that she was traveling west and hit a dip in the road," Huggins said. "It had been raining and kind of threw her off, and when she hit a patch of grass, she tried to pull it back on the road and jerked the wheel too hard and hit big oak tree after flipping."
The car flew 120 feet before it struck the tree, according to a Sheriff's Department report.
The couple was heading west into Greenwood from Robert Lathan's home on Mississippi 35, where Brown was living, according to Lathan's wife, Debbie Daves. Her family learned about the accident shortly after it occurred, she said.
Daves said Brown suffered a lacerated liver in the accident.
Floyd's family remembers her as a kind person whose sense of humor and nurturing nature were perfect for her job taking care of an elderly couple in Carrollton.
"She always had a joke to tell," said Huggins. "She always had a smile for everybody. She was just a good person who never met stranger."
Floyd and her 10-year-old son, Joshua, moved back to Greenwood about a year ago after she had lived near Lake Providence, La., for 13 years. Since her return, she and her youngest sister, Jessica Prado, had been caring for Dr. Reed Carroll and his wife, Evelyn.
"They loved her," said Prado. "They called today saying they sure hated it, that she was like part of their family."
Funeral arrangements for Floyd, which are being handled by Williams & Lord Funeral Home, were incomplete this morning.
