America's veterans will be honored Nov. 11 during Veterans Day ceremonies, but the event is not just for those with ties to the military.
"We want everyone in the city, everyone, to be a part of this. We just happen to be the hosts," said Johnny Favara, the commander of the Keesler-Hamrick-Gillespie American Legion Post No. 29.
The program will be held at the Veterans Memorial Gazebo on East Claiborne Avenue. It starts at 10:30 a.m. with music by the Greenwood Community Concert Band.
At 11 a.m., the Rev. Glenn Seefeld, pastor of Greenwood's First United Methodist Church, will lead the invocation, which will be followed by the posting of the colors by Pillow Academy Color Guard members Zach Underwood, Roland Webster IV and Darryl Barrett.
A "missing man" fly-over tribute will be performed by the Leflore County members of the Southwest Navion Air Group.
Connie Black will sing the National Anthem, and Legionnaire Viola Sanders will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
This year's speaker will be Chaplain Edward Allan "Ed" McDaniel, a retired U.S. Army colonel.
McDaniel is staff chaplain at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jackson. He once served as pastor of First Baptist Church.
This year, special recognition will be given to Marsh Pickett, a World War II veteran and member of Post 29, who also serves as the Leflore County veterans service officer.
Following the program, refreshments will be served at the American Legion Hut. Those refreshments will be provided by members of the Greenwood Matinee Musicale, Favara said.
