MCCOMB - Mississippi State basketball recruit Jackie Butler expects to meet with the NCAA to discuss his relationship with a summer league coach and his unofficial visit to Auburn in 2001.
Attorney Donald Jackson from Birmingham, Ala., who represents the McComb High School star, said Thursday that he is trying to schedule the meeting - possibly a conference call - for sometime in the next week.
Jackson said Butler has done nothing wrong.
"It should be fairly routine," Jackson said of the upcoming meeting.
Butler is a McDonald's All-American who has verbally committed to Mississippi State, but has yet to sign a national letter of intent. The spring signing period ended Thursday.
"This has absolutely nothing to do with Mississippi State," Jackson said.
The NCAA is investigating possible rules violations by the Mississippi State football program.
The 6-foot-10 Butler has already met with the NCAA at least once. The NCAA is looking into allegations that Butler received improper gifts from AAU coach Mark Komara of Huntsville, Ala., as part of its ongoing investigation of Auburn's basketball program.
A player can compromise his college eligibility if he is found to have accepted improper benefits while in high school.
Jackson said he hopes this will be the final time the NCAA will interview Butler.
Butler, 18, declined to comment on his previous meetings with the NCAA during an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday.
"I don't want to talk about that," he said.
Butler has yet to meet academic requirements to play at Mississippi State next season. He said he is awaiting results of a recently taken ACT.
If Butler makes the necessary grades, he could still sign with Mississippi State in the fall and be with the Bulldogs by second semester next season.
There was speculation that Butler would make himself available for the NBA draft, but the deadline for that passed Monday without him filing the necessary paperwork.
