MOORHEAD - As the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans get set for a crucial four-game stretch of North Division games, MDCC head coach Jay Miller says its time to play smart.
Last week against East Mississippi, the Trojan defense held the Lions to just six first downs for the entire game but gave up four touchdowns in the 35-26 win - due mainly to mental breakdowns and penalties (13 for 130 yards). "We actually didn't play bad for the first three quarters, but then at the end, we turned the ball over and lost our concentration. We must play better than that if we are going to continue winning," Miller said.
The win last week moved the Trojans to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in the North Division standings.
MDCC must defeat Coahoma Thursday night in Moorhead to stay in the chase for a playoff spot in the North. Kickoff is set for 7 at Jim Randall Stadium.
Both Coahoma and MDCC are 1-1 in the North standings. Northeast Mississippi, which beat Coahoma 43-13 two weeks ago, is in first place at 2-0.
Northwest, a 24-12 winner over Delta two weeks ago, is in second at 1-0 going into Thursday night's game against winless division foe Holmes.
After playing Coahoma, the Trojans travel to face Northeast and then host Itawamba and Holmes.
Coahoma notched its first win of the season with a 24-23 victory over Itawamba last week.
The Tigers are 1-3 overall with losses to Jones (51-12), Gulf Coast (49-27) and Northeast (43-13).
In the only game in common, the Trojans defeated Gulf Coast 28-0 to open the season.
