The Leflore County Sheriff's Department assisted by U.S. Marshals, have apprehended a man wanted for first-degree murder in Shelby County, Tennessee.
Willie Jarvis Vanhook, 28, whose address was not available, remains in the Leflore County Jail awaiting extradition to Shelby County, said Sheriff Ricky Banks.
"We got some information on him Friday, that he was wanted. They came down and helped us," Banks said, referring to the marshals.
Vanhook was charged in Shelby County with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Christopher Sanders, 33, during an apparent argument at 2887 Shady Vista in Frayser, Tenn. on May 5.
Sanders death was the 59th homicide recorded in Memphis this year, according to a report earlier this year in The Commercial Appeal.
Banks said the marshals knew the address where Vanhook was staying in Greenwood.
He could not provide the street or house number where the arrest actually took place.
The sheriff said he wasn't sure if Vanhook would fight extradition, which could further delay his return to Tennessee.
The U.S. Marshals office in Memphis was not able to provide information on the case involving Vanhook Saturday night.
A patrolman, who identified himself as M. Reynolds, and who works in the warrants office of the Shelby County Sheriff's Department could only confirm Saturday that a felony warrant for Vanhook had been issued in Shelby County.
Ironically, Shelby County posted a description and mug shot of Vanhook on its Web site and also listed the charge against him as first degree murder.
Reynolds confirmed that Vanhook is being held in Leflore County based upon the Shelby County warrant.
Reynolds declined to give out any more information about the case.
