A line of thunderstorms accompanied by high winds moved through Leflore County Saturday leaving a lot of rain and little damage in their wake, according to an emergency management official.
"For a while there we were under a tornado watch. We've gotten a lot of rain and wind," said Jimmy Goss, a volunteer with the Greenwood-Leflore Emergency Management Agency.
While the National Weather Service reported that a tornado was spotted near Itta Bena on County Road 515 Saturday around 6:30 p.m., that sighting hasn't been confirmed, Goss said.
Greenwood-Leflore Airport, reported a total of just more than half an inch of rain around 7 p.m. Saturday.
"We've had a few tornadoes spotted in the line that just moved east of Greenwood," said Mark McAllister, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Other National Weather Service reports indicated the storm system displayed a violent streak.
In Sunflower County, a shed was blown down. A church in Avalon, on Mississippi 7, also suffered serious damage, McAllister said.
Grenada received dime-sized hail. In Dermott, Ark., the hail was reported to be tennis ball-sized, he said.
McAllister said that while the storms had passed through Leflore County by 7:30 p.m., he added, "You're still going to get radial winds for most of the night."
Goss said volunteer storm spotters were continuing to monitor the situation throughout the evening.
