Gerald Holmes scored on a 15-yard run with 7:26 remaining in the fourth quarter to lift Southern University to a 17-14 win over visiting Mississippi Valley State Saturday night in Baton Rouge.

Miss. Valley came back in the second period as Aries Nelson tossed a six-yard scoring strike to Kendrick Wade. John Zdonek kicked the extra point to make it 10-7 at the half.
In the third, Marcus April scored from a yard out with 4:10 rermaining and Zdoken kicked the point after for a 14-10 lead.
Nelson completed 17 of 34 passes for 192 yards and one interception. He also rushed for 65 yards on 11 carries.
April finished with 61 yards on 22 carries.
Valley falls to 0-2 on the season.
