A Tennessee man who was shot in the face in North Greenwood is in good condition recovering at a Jackson hospital, while a preliminary hearing for his accused shooter has been continued.
James McDonald, now of Old Hickory, Tenn., has spent the last month at University Medical Center in Jackson after being found wounded late Saturday night, April 12, in the road near the intersection of Beech Street and East Jefferson Avenue.
McDonald's former in-law, Brandon Hammons, 21, of 524 Taylor Drive, is accused of shooting him in the face late Saturday night, April 12. Hammons has been out on a $20,000 bond since the incident.
On Wednesday, a preliminary hearing to decide whether the aggravated assault charge against Hammons will be heard by a grand jury was rescheduled for May 28.
Police say they are still not sure about a motive for the shooting. A knife was found with McDonald at the scene, but its involvement in the incident is uncertain, Chief Ronnie White said.
"At this point, we don't know. … We know there was a knife there, and all indications are that it belonged to McDonald," he said.
McDonald was married to Hammons' sister, but the former couple was not living together, White said.
"If they were still married, they were separated," he said. "That's kind of a family matter, and I don't know what the situation is."
