BENTONIA - A collision near Bentonia left two people dead and the wife of Greenwood state Sen. David Jordan hospitalized.
Christine B. Jordan was southbound on U.S. 49 when the accident occurred on Tuesday, the Highway Patrol said. James Graves, 67, and his wife, Shirley Graves, 70, were traveling northbound on the highway.
The Graves were pronounced dead at the scene, said Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers, who was the son of Shirley Graves.
"The Highway Patrol officer handed me their driver's licenses without knowing it was my mother and stepfather," Shivers said.
Christine Jordan, 66, was hospitalized Wednesday at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.
"She has a broken ankle on her left leg, a broken heel and her knee cap has been dislocated. Her right wrist is broken," said Jordan.
Jordan said that his wife is experiencing "a lot of swelling and pain, but nothing life threatening."
He said his wife rested comfortably through the night.
"It is a blessing my wife's still alive," Jordan said. "But I'm so saddened that the other people were killed.
"She was saddened when she found out about that two people that died," Jordan said.
Jordan said he received a call this morning from Shivers.
"He called this morning and he told me that he was the son of the two people killed. He called out of concern for Christine," Jordan said.
"We have a lot in common," Jordan said. "He is a Baptist and a deacon in the church and I am a Baptist and a deacon in the church," Jordan said.
Jordan said his children are coming in from Dallas and Nashville today.
He expressed appreciation for all the calls he has received from people in Greenwood regarding his wife's condition.
The Graves had been at a doctor's appointment at G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson, Shivers said.
Highway Patrol spokesman Warren Strain could not provide details on the accident.
"At this point, it is under investigation," Strain said.
