For the second time in three days, Pillow Academy dropped a hard-fought game in extra innings.
The Mustangs lost 8-7 in eight innings to Washington School Monday night at Pillow, dropping them to 5-6 overall, 1-5 in the North AAA conference.
The Generals went ahead 3-0 in the top of the second, only to see Pillow tie the game in the bottom of the frame.
Pillow, which lost 4-2 in eight innings on Friday to
Madison-Ridgeland Academy, led 6-5 after five innings.
Washington scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. But the Mustangs tied the game again in the bottom of the sixth.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Washington's Drew Tominello led off the eighth with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Win Cadenhead.
The Generals then got a walk and a double off starting pitcher Jason Moss to put runners at first and third with two outs. Louis Coleman, in relief of Moss, got the next batter to ground out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Matt Hargett got a 1-out single, but was stranded at first base after back-to-back fly-outs by the Mustangs.
Jordan Fuller got the win for Washington, allowing seven runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking five. Cadenhead got the save by getting the last two outs.
"We're playing good right now, but not good enough to win," Pillow coach Tommy Nester said. "We're not getting the key hits or key defensive plays when we need them the most.
"I think the effort is there, but we've just got to learn to win the close games."
The Mustangs had a chance to end the game in the bottom of the seventh, when Tyler Counts reached base on a error with one out and stole second base. But a strikeout and fly-out ended the scoring threat.
Junior pitcher Jason Moss was charged with the loss. He worked 7-2/3 innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits, while striking out two and walking two.
Hargett and Matthew Malouf had two hits each for Pillow. Hargett had two RBIs and Malouf one.
Coleman had one hit and two RBIs. John Craig Patterson had a hit and an RBI and scored two runs. Counts had a hit and scored a run.
Down 3-0 after 1½ innings, the Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the second. Ryan Taylor started things with a walk. Patterson had an RBI double, advanced to third
on an error and came home on a balk.
Pate Shackelford reached on an error and scored on a single by Hargett.
Pillow added three more runs in the fourth, scoring on a fielder's choice by Hargett, a single by Malouf and a walk by Coleman with the bases loaded.
Pillow's run in the sixth came when Malouf doubled and scored on a single by Coleman.
Washington was led at the plate by Ben Turner, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Pillow hosts Oak Hill tonight at 7 in a non-conference contest.
