Jeff Jones is anxious to see who will emerge as Pillow Academy's starting quarterback during tonight's preseason jamboree.
The Mustangs will scrimmage against Magnolia Heights at 6:30 to kick off the jamboree. Pillow will close out the jamboree around 7:40 with a scrimmage against Washington School.
"The big thing that we need to do is settle in on a quarterback. Hopefully, this will show us who can lead this team," said the first-year PA head coach.
Sophomore Jay Mitchell is battling junior Martin Fisher for the starting nod at quarterback. Neither player has thrown a pass in a varsity game. While Mitchell was quarterbacking the PA ninth-grade team to an undefeated season in 2004, Fisher was the backup to Louis Coleman.
Sophomore Pate Shackelford has also been working at quarterback and is expected to get some snaps under center tonight.
"Pate hasn't been working at quarterback as much, because he is so valuable at receiver," the head coach explained.
Jones said the Mustangs are ready to hit "somebody other than ourselves."
"Magnolia Heights and Washington were both physical teams last year, so we want to see how our young guys stack up against physical teams," said Jones, who has just four seniors on his roster.
The Mustangs open the season Aug. 26 at home against Clarksdale Lee, which opens its season Friday night against DeSoto.
