After watching his team scrimmage against Manchester Friday, Pillow Academy head coach Jeff Jones thinks the Mustangs are headed in the right direction.
"Overall, it went pretty well, but we've still got a lot of work to do," said the first-year head coach. "I liked our aggressiveness. I liked the way we ran the ball, and for the most part, I liked the way we played defense."
Junior center Adron Belk suffered a foot injury on the second play of the scrimmage. At first, Belk was thought to have a broken bone that might require surgery, but Jones was relieved to announce Saturday there was no break in the bone.
"The doctor told him nothing was broken, and that they were treating the injury like a sprain," Jones said.
At times, the Pillow first-string offense dominated the Manchester defense with its ground attack.
"Our strength was running the ball right at them. We proved that we have five backs that really run the ball hard," Jones said. "We've got to get better passing the ball, and we will. We had some good throws and some bad throws."
Defensively, the Mustangs held Manchester pretty well in check.
"We kept things very basic, and I believe we could have stopped the few things they had success with by making adjustments."
The Mustangs will host a three-team jamboree Aug. 18 and will open the season Aug. 26 at home against Clarksdale Lee.
