Nominations are now being sought the 2000 Greenwood-Leflore County Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame is sponsored by the Leadership Tomorrow Alumni Association of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce.
The 2000 inductee will be the fifth honoree and will be recognized at the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting in February.
"We have four distinguished honorees," said Claudia Henson, chairman of the Leadership Tomorrow Alumni Association.
"Our first was Dr. James Flanagan, who is an internationally known scientist. Our second was the late John O. Emmerich, who was nationally known in newspaper circles. Aven Whittington also has a national reputation in the agriculture field, and Viola Sanders was the highest ranking officer in the U.S. Navy. All of them have their roots in Leflore County, and all have proven to be effective leaders in their community," Henson said.
According to Janice Moor, the chamber's executive vice president, nominees must have served as ambassadors for Leflore County and role models for its citizens.
Nominees must have lived in Leflore County for at least five years. And, former citizens who have moved on to achieve success elsewhere may be nominated. Deceased persons are also eligible.
Moor said the chamber is seeking to find distinguished individuals who are of the same caliber as the first four honorees.
To nominate someone for the Greenwood-Leflore County Hall of Fame, contact the chamber for an entry form. Also, include a letter of nomination on the back of the entry form or on a separate page. The letter should include the nominee's achievements and other reasons he or she should be inducted into the Hall of Fame, Moor said.
