ITTA BENA - Making calls and pulling strings is "right up my alley" says Corey Moore, a junior studying public administration at Mississippi Valley State University.
On Friday, he arranged to have more than 120 boxes of toiletries and non-perishable food delivered to his surrogate home.
"I thought it would be an excellent idea to duplicate these things right here in the Delta. That's what we're attempting to do," Moore said.
He learned of the non-profit Feed the Children from his friend Rep. Chuck Espy, D-Clarksdale. Feed the Children is an international non-profit that provides aid after disasters.
After hearing of the organization's help throughout the state, Moore asked the organization to stop in Itta Bena.
He chose to help Itta Bena over his native Cleveland because, "I wanted to target the area that lacked the resources first," Moore said.
Moore had plenty of helpers at the L.T. Brazil Community Center to unload the truck of supplies, including 12 members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at MVSU.
"It's important that we be examples of what families and communities can do together with the power of unity," said member Greg Merriweather.
"One way or another we all have our hands tied into that situation," Merriweather said.
Espy was on hand as well to unload.
"A lot of people simply need hope right now and that's our mission right now," said the legislature.
Everyone in Leflore County has pitched in to help hurricane evacuees with relief and to enroll children in school, according to Moore.
"I want them to know what they're doing is not in vain."
