Rikeshia Davidson soaks up information - anything from cartoons to Barbie dolls to the latest headlines.
That's one of the reasons for this 20-year-old Mississippi Valley State University junior's success for the past three years in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge.
"I think anything you do is preparation for Honda," she said.
Last year as captain, her team from MVSU made it to the championship tournament in Orlando, Fla. Now, she's looking for more students who want to participate.
The campus tournament begins 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Social Science Building Auditorium. Participants must be MVSU students, and all students who compete are eligible for selection as a member of the varsity squad, said Joyce Roundtree-McCoy, one of the tournament's coordinators.
The sign-up deadline for teams is Tuesday. Each team must have four players.
The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge began in 1989, and since then 50,000 students have competed nationwide.
Once again, the campus winners will travel to the national tournament in Orlando, which is scheduled for March 30 through April 3, 2006.
Davidson got involved as a freshman because someone who was already a part of a team asked her to join. The tournament on the local level seemed similar to ones in which she had participated while on an academic team coached by Francis Coleman at Weir High School, she said.
Now, she's hooked and getting information from a variety of sources, including television, almanacs, books, "anything that might be useful to you," Davidson said.
