CARROLLTON - The Committee for Equal Justice will hold a memorial service, neighborhood clean-up and a fund-raiser barbecue Saturday in Carrollton and North Carrollton.
Everyone is invited to take part, according to Equal Justice members Penny Griffin and Niooki Givens.
The memorial is for Debbie Denise Loggins, the 33-year old North Carrollton mother who died two months ago in the custody of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department.
"We just want to bring attention to her and what happened to her and to the tragedy that surrounds her case - and let people know that she is not forgotten," Givens said.
Griffin said Equal Justice continues to seek answers about the cause of Loggins' death.
Authorities have yet to make public the results of an autopsy and toxicology test.
Delores Lewis, public affairs coordinator for the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol said a news release Tuesday that the investigation into her death by the patrol's "Bureau of Investigation remains incomplete."
In September, Carroll County deputies arrested Loggins for fighting. Another deputy drover her, shackled hand to foot, to jail in Grenada.
Authorities found her unconsicous in the patrol car. They called an ambulance, and it took her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Her death prompted the organization of the committee, which has planned the memorial service for several weeks.
Equal Justice members Alonzo Lewis of Coila and the Rev. Al Williamson of McCarley will speak at the service. Those attending will carry lighted candles.
Equal Justice is selling T-shirts and sweatshirts for people to wear to the service. These have the committee's name, Loggins' picture, the date she was born and the date she died, Givens said.
After the service, Equal Justice will pick up litter in the neighborhood around Marshall Elementary School in North Carrollton.
The barbecue in downtown North Carrollton will offer hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken.
