The nation will observe Memorial Day on Monday, and Greenwood is looking forward to a restful and relaxing Memorial Day weekend.
On Saturday, local World War II veterans will receive special recognition during a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park on East Claiborne Avenue.
The program will last from 9 a.m.-11 a.m., and will include special music, prayer and a fly-over by the Southwest Navion Air Group.
On Monday, the Leflore County Courthouse and the Greenwood City Hall will be closed as well as all banks and post offices.
Law enforcement agencies and most grocery stores will remain open.
The Greenwood Country Club will have its usual barbecue and pool activities for members, and the Leflore County Country Club will have a members-only mixed club scramble.
Those planning to dine out Monday should call in advance, as some restaurants will be closed to observe the holiday.
Next week's garbage collection schedules will also be affected.
The Leflore County Solid Waste Department will not pick up garbage on Monday. The department will collect Monday's and Tuesday's garbage on Tuesday. The rest of the week's garbage collection will operate as usual.
Greenwood's Public Works Department will not work Monday either. The department will pick up Monday's garbage on Tuesday, and will pick up Tuesday's garbage on Wednesday.
During the holiday, the department will provide garbage trailers for the public to use. These trailers will be located at Save-A-Lot grocery, the 600 block of Johnson Street, Bankston School, the Boys Club on Carrollton Avenue and City Barn at 600 Parkway.
