Seventeen have filed qualifying papers to run in Carroll County municipal elections June 5, according to city clerks from Carrollton, North Carrollton and Vaiden.
Cutoff is March 2 by closing time. People interested in seeking office should pick up petitions at their city hall. Each petition when returned should include signatures of at least 15 qualified electors in that town.
In Carrollton, City Clerk Linda McGregor said late Tuesday that Mayor Annie Mae Wilson, the incumbent, has filed to seek re-election. So have two incumbents for alderman, Betty Morgan and Harold Scruggs.
In North Carrollton, Mayor Sarah Grantham is running to try and keep her job, while Ken Strachan also is angling for mayor. Aldermen Warren Mitchell Costilow, James G. George and W. L. Lott have filed to run again, while newcomer Dianne Slocum also has filed to run for alderman, said City Clerk Mag Corder.
In Vaiden, George W. Turbeville Jr. has filed for mayor. So has the incumbent, Tommy Thornton, according to City Clerk Edie Cooper. Candidates for alderman filing so far include two incumbents, Frances "Bud" Welch and Brad Watkins. Others filing are James Cox, Lemon Cunningham, Marcus Purnell, and Grace Voorhees.
