Services for Mabel Petty White, 84, of Greenwood, who died of cancer Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at her home, will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. White was a former Leflore County Circuit Clerk. Born in Memphis, Tenn., on April 29, 1919, Mrs. White moved to Greenwood at the age of six months, and was baptized as an infant at First United Methodist Church. A graduate of Greenwood High School, she worked for 28 years at the Leflore County Courthouse in the offices of the Sheriff, Tax Collector and Assessor and Chancery Clerk before being elected Circuit Clerk in 1980. She served one term and retired from public office in January 1985.
A lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Mrs. White served on numerous committees in the church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and served as the group's president, vice president, secretary and circle chairman. She was a member and teacher of the Sis Taylor Sunday School class at the time of her death.
Mrs. White was an active member and past president of the J.Z. George Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She also was the adult leader of the Children of the Confederacy Chapter for many years and served on the Board of Control of the Confederate Memorial Building in recent years.
Mrs. White and her husband were charter members of the Greenwood Civitan and Civitannas Clubs and served in various capacities in those organizations. She was a member and past president of the LeFleur Garden Club. An avid bridge player, she spent many years, especially after her retirement, as a member of several bridge clubs.
Mrs. White was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond H. White; and a sister, Louise Atkins of Shreveport, La.
She is survived by two daughters, Martha Floyd of Greenwood and Sharon Patrick and her husband, Rick, of Madison; a brother, Ralph B. Petty of Greenwood; two granddaughters, Vicky Floyd of Pearl and Leigh Ann Vance and her husband, Kenny, of Indianola; and two great-grandsons, Dustin Vance and Hunter Vance, both of Indianola.
The Rev. Glenn Seefeld and the Rev. Grady Bailey will officiate at the services.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Willis Brumfield, Eddie Amelung, Ralph Petty Jr., Billy Floyd, Joe Floyd, Kip Farrell and Danny Hardin.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 this evening at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or the Confederate Memorial Building Fund.
