Beverly Smith said she is pleased with this year's Love Lights A Tree campaign.
So far, $1,820 has been raised in the effort, which features a Christmas tree at the Leflore County Courthouse.
Also, as part of the courthouse display, an updated listing of cancer survivors as well as a memorial for those that have succumbed to the disease is prominently on view.
"The response has been real good," said Smith, who is co-chairing this year's effort with Ilse Goldberg.
The program, which is sponsored by the Leflore County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, is designed to raise public awareness about the disease and help fund the fight against cancer.
Love Lights and the Relay for Life, which will be held next year, are the two primary fund-raisers for the group.
For a $10 donation, a cancer survivor's name can be added to the list. The same applies for donations made in memory of a cancer victim.
Thursday afternoon, Trey Evans, Leflore County circuit clerk, made a donation for $20 in memory of his mother, Betty Jane Evans, and his father, Howard Evans. They died of cancer in 2002 and 2003, respectively.
Smith said she's optimistic that the chapter will break its 2005 record of $2,000.
"We've got two more weeks. You know, an advertisement like this will help," she said.
Smith said the display at the courthouse will continue until the first of the year.
