The Greenwood Little Theatre will begin its 2001-2002 season this week with the production of "Once Upon A Mattress" at the W.M. Whittington Jr. Playhouse.
The production is scheduled to take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and again at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The play is set in a kingdom in the medieval ages. The kingdom is run by a silent king (Dr. Duane Hurt) and an overbearing queen (Kate Hummel). It was decreed that no one in the kingdom could marry until Prince Dauntless (Will Perkins) was married.
Because this affects so many others in the kingdom, everyone is interested in the outcome of a series of tests put forth by the queen to determine whether certain princesses were worthy to marry the prince.
After 12 princesses have been eliminated, Sir Harry sets forth determined to find a princess who can pass the tests. Winnefred the Woebegone (Tante Roberts) seems to have none of the qualities the qualities the queen is looking for, but Prince Dauntless falls hopelessly in love with her. The queen imposes a special test to rid the castle of this princess, but will Winnefred pass the test?
The play is being directed by Sherrie Barrett. She is being assisted by Diane Stewart. The choral director is Marianna Madden.
Those without season tickets for the performances may purchase single-event tickets for $15 for adults and $10 for students. Patrons or those with season tickets may call Patrice Peacock at 455-9324 for reservations.
