First impressions mean a lot, said Marion Howard.
Creating a good first impression is her goal as chairwoman of the Greenwood Tree Board and as chairwoman of the beautification committee of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce.
Now, Howard wants the Leflore County Board of Supervisors to get into the act.
On Monday, Howard talked the supervisors into providing labor for trimming trees along the river front, from the offices of Viking Range Corp. to just past the Leflore County Courthouse. The trees are hanging low, creating a safety hazard, she said.
"Somebody who knows about trees needs to take care of them," she said.
Additionally, Howard asked the county to help clean debris from around two of the four welcome signs just at the city limits. The chamber committee would like to see two of the four cleaned. "They've had no attention for 15-plus years," she said.
She also wants to know if the signs are on public or private property in the event the chamber might want to replace them. The chamber is getting quotes on how much it would cost to renovate or replace the signs.
Supervisor President Robert Moore of District 2 asked County Administrator Sam Abraham to find out, but asked Howard not to fix something if it isn't broken. "We'll do what we can," he told her. "If it's on county right of way or we'll let you know whose land it's on."
The signs were placed outside the city limits about a quarter century ago, according to Howard.
