When the new Hampton Inn opens Friday, it will add 74 new guest rooms for Greenwood visitors and increase the city's total to almost 700.
Among these, 134 will be owned and operated by the Hampton's operator, Chawla Enterprises of Greenwood.
The family-owned company also operates Greenwood's 60-room Comfort Inn, built in 1989.
"We're focusing on the Delta," said Suresh Chawla of Greenwood, an owner and the Hampton's general manager. He works with his father and brother, owners Dr. V.K. Chawla of Greenwood and Dinesh Chawla of Cleveland, in the business.
Dr. Chawla said the company is expanding to meet demand in the Delta. "It needs high quality and higher quality rooms, which have been missing," he said.
Suresh Chawla said the company has different types of hotels because they attract different types of customers.
The Hampton offers a fitness center, free high-speed Internet access, and, in guest rooms, work desks with dataports and ergonomic chairs and lap desks for use with laptop computers.
Chawla Enterprises has seven other hotels in Clarksdale, Cleveland and Greenville.
The company will open two more hotels this year: a Holiday Inn Express in Greenville in June and another Express in Grenada in September.
By the year's end, Chawla Enterprises will have nine hotels. After that, the number should rise to 12.
The company also expects to build three more hotels, which now are in the "planning and development" stages. These include three-story Comfort Inn Suites in Cleveland and Greenville, and a Holiday Inn Express in Greenwood.
The five-story Holiday Inn Express will be constructed adjacent to the Hampton property on U.S. 82 west. The Holiday Inn Express will be located south of the Hampton, between it and West Claiborne Extended.
The Hampton is a three-story hotel with an elevator and interior corridors, so there's no outside entrance to individual guest rooms.
The hotel also has an elevator, a swimming pool, a meeting room that will hold 100 people and a large lobby with sofas in one area and small round tables with chairs in another area.
