Christine Hinton-Lee hardly knows the people sleeping in her childhood home.
But she's confident she made the right choice.
"It really was a match made in heaven," she said.
For the past two weeks, the old dusty house on Bowie Lane has been repaired and repainted.
The house has been empty since Hinton-Lee's mother died seven years ago.
On Friday, Hinton-Lee handed the keys over to a family of seven evacuees from New Orleans. They are living there rent free.
"I am very very grateful for Christine's offer," said family member Deveda Conley.
For five weeks, this New Orleans native and her 3-year-old daughter, Jade, have been living at the Best Western in Greenwood.
Moving in with Conley is her sister and her husband with their two children.
Now that she has a home, Conley said she can focus on finding a job and starting a new life.
"I wanted to help some way. One night it hit me that there was a vacant house in Greenwood someone could use," said Hinton-Lee.
She knows her deceased parents, Scott and Clara Hinton, would have wanted it this way.
"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.My parents always wanted to do their share," she said.
Sharing and working on the home has been a blessing.
"I haven't slept much. But I have felt so alive doing this," said Hinton-Lee.
