The Greenwood chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill is planning for a big day on May 14.
On May 14, the 12 Mississippi NAMI affiliates will host a NAMI Walks For the Mind of America 2005 fundraiser. The walk will be held at Mayes Lake at Lefleur's Bluff State Park in Jackson.
NAMI handles mental illness on several levels. The grassroots program raises money to research mental illness, comfort the family members of those with mental illness and educate the public on the reality of mental illness.
"This year we are stomping out the stigma of mental illness. The mentally ill are not always violent, and they're not retarded," said Phaedre Cole, deputy director of programs at Life Help.
Last year, Greenwood NAMI raised the most money, $4,470, and had the most walkers come, 55. The members have already raised close to $3,000.
Ninety percent of the money they raise for the 4-kilometer walk will be distributed back to the affiliates. The other 10 percent goes to the state office.
The walk is important to the Greenwood chapter. "This walk has given us money, which helps out mental illness education. The exposure is beneficial," said Edwina McCain, a founding member of Greenwood NAMI.
Dorothy Robertson, deputy director of public relations for Life Help, says this walk is for awareness. She explained that there are walks for cancer, leukemia and heart disease, but mental illness is often left out.
"Mental illness is a disease like any other. It's just a chemical imbalance. People condemn those with mental illness because they don't understand," said Robertson.
"The money we raise funds eduction, so people know the truth. I want the mentally ill to lift their heads and be proud," she said.
Greenwood NAMI has discussed offering free T-shirts to those who sign up. Those interested in volunteering or becoming a sponsor can contact Robertson at 662-455-8725, extension 202.
