Greenwood's Michael Joe Cannon will be inducted into the Northwest Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony Thursday on the Senatobia campus.
The former Calhoun City High School standout is one of four who will be honored. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the David M. Haraway Center.
"When I first got the call, I was surprised but quite appreciative. I was floored because I think of all the other guys who I played with and who played after me who were such good players," said Cannon.
Cannon went to Northwest in 1978, helping the Rangers to a 6-3-1 record from his defensive end position. Cannon missed the 1979 season due to a knee injury and closed out his career at Northwest in 1980, earning all-state honors and helping the Rangers to a 7-3 mark.
He recorded 81 tackles during his sophomore season, 31 of which were unassisted, and came up with five fumble recoveries.
Following his standout career at Northwest, Cannon started two years at outside linebacker for the Memphis State Tigers. During his senior year at Memphis, he received honorable mention on the All-Metro Conference team. Cannon was named MVP by the Memphis coaching staff.
After receiving his bachelor's degree in education, Cannon returned to Northwest Community College in 1983 - coaching defense for the Rangers for then-head coach Bobby Franklin until 1986.
