The Lady Bulldogs entered the "big house" in Jackson today, and Greenwood High School students couldn't be more excited.
The girls' basketball team played today in the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson in the first round of the State 4A tournament. They faced Northeast Jones.
"I want them to go all the way and win it all," said Corderio Russell, a senior.
If the Lady Bulldogs snagged a victory over Northeast Jones today, they will advance to play Wayne County on Friday night in the semifinals. Principal George Noflin said the Lady Bulldogs have bounced back against teams, such as Clarksdale, that beat them in the beginning of the season to become the second-best team in the 4A North.
The team is ranked fourth in the state, Noflin said."They really peaked at the right time."
Although school remained in session, some students, such as Russell, 18, traveled down to Jackson today to pep up the team. Russell is the band's drum major.
The platers always perk up when they hear the school's fight song "Go Mighty Bulldogs," Russell said.
Ja'Net Blackmon,17,also a senior, said she has enjoyed watching the girls' determination over the season. "They enjoy what they are doing. That's why they came so far," she said.
Russell and Blackmon think all the players work hard, but they enjoy seeing Adrian Smith work the court in particular.
Smith contributed 16 points to Friday's win over Callaway. Noflin is particularly proud of that victory, because Callaway has beaten the Lady Bulldogs twice.
Students are positive there will be soon be a state championship trophy gleaming in the display case. "The underdogs have come out. They'll see what we're made of," Russell said.
