Banker Timothy Wayne Davis was known for his hard work and loyalty and will be missed in the community, his former colleagues said this morning.
Mr. Davis, 53, died of cancer Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Carrollton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church. Wilson & Knight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
At the time of his death, Mr. Davis was chief financial officer at State Bank and Trust, formerly Valley Bank. His responsibilities included 22 banks from Clarksdale to McComb.
He was a former executive vice president of Trustmark National Bank.
Stewart Brumfield, chief executive officer and chairman of the board at State Bank and Trust, said Mr. Davis was very loyal to his job and colleagues.
"Mr. Davis was a valued employee of State Bank & Trust Co. and a close personal friend of mine," Brumfield said. "He had tremendous abilities, tenacity, high morals and great integrity."
Mr. Davis also was a certified public accountant who kept his accounting license - an unusual move for a banker, Brumfield said.
Clay McWilliams, president and chief executive officer of the bank's northern division, said in a statement that Mr. Davis was "an inspiration to us all."
"Tim Davis will be missed at State Bank," McWilliams said. "He was a very good banker with many very successful years' experience in commercial lending, cash flow and credit analysis. He made a very significant contribution to our bank and provided strong leadership in his areas of expertise."
McWilliams said Mr. Davis remained devoted to his job despite his illness.
"Tim had actually requested to be connected by telephone from his bed in the hospital to the Senior Loan Committee meeting which took place the evening before his death," McWilliams said. "He carried out his duties and responsibilities to the bank up to the very end."
Mr. Davis was born Sept. 10, 1947 in Bokchito, Okla., and later moved to Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M University and received a master's degree from Southern Oklahoma State University.
During his 23-year career in banking and finance, he was associated with the Bank of Hollandale, Trustmark and Deposit Guaranty National Bank.
Mr. Davis was involved in numerous civic and professional activities. He served on the board of directors of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce, the board of directors of the Greenwood Rotary Club and the board of regents of the Mississippi Museum of Art. He was associate chairman of the United Way of South Mississippi.
He also was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Marine Corps Reserve Officers Association. He also was a member of the Greenwood-Leflore Industrial Board and the Greenwood-Leflore-Carroll Economic Development Foundation.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Hart Craig Davis; two daughters, Mary Leslie Davis and Alison Francis Davis, both of Greenwood; and one son, Barry Craig Davis of Greenwood.
Pallbearers will be Lynn Hebert, Stewart Brumfield, Jim Conway, Clay McWilliams, Chip Ford and Mickey Black.
