BRANDON - Greenwood's Cissye Gallagher has won a record 10 Mississippi Women's Golf Association state amateur titles. She will have to go through a mighty tough opponent today to make it 11.
Gallagher won two match-play rounds here Thursday at Castlewoods Country Club to advance to this morning's championship round against Virginia Grimes. The two were scheduled to tee off at 10.
Grimes plays a lot more competitive golf than Gallagher, the 39-year-old mother of four. The 45-year-old former Auburn golf coach will represent the U.S. in next month's international Curtis Cup matches. She is a five-time winner of the Alabama state am and a two-time Southern Am champ.
But Gallagher, a former LSU standout who played one year on the LPGA Tour, isn't backing down from the task.
"I will be up for the challenge," Gallagher said. "The quickest way to get beat is to make (your opponent) out to be better than they really are."
On Wednesday, Gallagher won her quarterfinal match in the morning 2 and 1 over Brittney Hanna. She won 3 and 2 over Shannon Adams in the afternoon semifinals.
Grimes had to play 45 holes, since she needed 10 extra holes to defeat Katherine Jones in the quarterfinals. She then beat defending champion and MSU's top golfer Amanda Mathis 3 and 1 to reach the championship round.
