Temperatures are expected to dip below freezing in Leflore County tonight, but the cold snap shouldn't last long.
The drop began when a Sunday evening rain storm came through the Delta.
The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for all Mississippi counties above Interstate 20 with the possibility of temperatures as low as 25 degrees, according to meteorologist Latrice Maxie.
"They'll probably start dropping pretty fast after sunset and get down to the mid-20s by midnight," Maxie said.
At Greenwood around 9 this morning, the temperature was 37 degrees. The normal temperatures this time of year are lows around 45 degrees and highs around 60 degrees.
Although almost an inch of rain fell in parts of Leflore County on Sunday night, the forecast included no precipitation. Residents should still take precautions, Maxie said.
"Right now, we're encouraging people to protect their animals and plants and to protect their pipes, maybe wrap them or leave the water dripping overnight to keep from freezing," she said.
Maxie predicted the cold spell to lift starting Tuesday.
"A warming trend will begin as early as tomorrow," she said. "The wind will become southerly and temperatures will begin to increase, with lows back into the mid-30s."
