CARROLLTON - Former mayor Harold Scruggs won his bid to serve as alderman here during a special election Tuesday.
Scruggs, 71, polled 48 votes over Gary Bankston's 16 votes, according to Election Commissioner Charlie Bell. Results were certified Tuesday night, Bell said.
Bankston, 37, and Scruggs, currently fire and emergency services coordinator for Carroll County, both sought the position left vacant in May when Annie Mae Wilson won the special election for mayor. The series of elections were prompted by the resignation of the town's longtime mayor, Beulah B. Smith, earlier in the year.
Wilson and Scruggs will serve until next summer under the terms of the recent elections.
