The Rev. Calvin Collins is known for his service to the religious community, the medical community and many other people who have asked for his help.
For his efforts, the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church pastor is being honored with the 2002 Community Service Award, presented annually in conjunction with the Commonwealth's Profile edition. This edition is included in today's newspaper.
"When you ask people what drives them to do good works, almost always you find it's a desire to put their faith into practice," said Tim Kalich, the Commonwealth's editor and publisher. "Calvin, as a tireless spiritual and community leader, embodies that ideal of taking religion beyond the church sanctuary or Sunday school room."
Collins received a bronze medal for this honor. Also, the Commonwealth will make a $500 donation to a charity of his choice. He has selected Greenwood Interfaith Ministries.
The award was established in 1989 to honor those making significant, lasting contributions to the area.
"One of Calvin's greatest impacts has been his commitment to building better race relations," Kalich said. "Greenwood has made a world of progress in this area, and it's because of individuals like Calvin Collins that it has done so."
The Profile edition contains 92 pages and 70 articles. The profile of Collins headlines the "Unsung Heroes" section, which also spotlights six other people also known for their selfless service.
Two new sections debut in Profile this year.
The first, "Front Line," features articles about the police, sheriff's and fire departments as well as First Responders. Also in that section are lists of these departments' employees along with biographical information.
The other new section is "Youth," which contains articles written by area high school students.
The "Welcome" section contains feature stories as well as general information about government, civic groups and other aspects of the area for newcomers.
That section will be available all year at the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Other sections returning this year are "Health," "Neighbors" and "Farm & Business."
