The Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce is looking for new members to land during this month's membership drive.
The drive, which is campaigning with a "fishing for business" theme, will last the month of March until mid-April.
"What we're offering is an investment in the community. As a member of the chamber, you get to network with other businesses and get your name out in the community," said Hugh Warren IV, chairman of the membership drive.
The drive, which kicked off Thursday, is inviting new businesses and past members to join. Individuals who would like to join are also welcome.
"Anybody who recognizes an area of the community that needs work should join," said Warren.
Membership cost is based on the industry and number of employees, but a minimum $150 is charged. Individuals who would like to join are charged $35.
"The goal for this year's membership drive is $10,000 in new member dues. But we look close to reaching that goal already," said Beth Henderson, executive vice president at the chamber.
"This opportunity is for people who want to get involved in Greenwood and Leflore County. The more you get into it, the more people you meet. All these contacts are beneficial for your business," said Henderson.
Four teams have been created to compete for the most new members. A mid-drive phone blitz is planned from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. March 31, when the teams will call potential members.
Cindy Tyler is the owner of Mississippi Gift Co. on Howard Street and a 12-year chamber member. She said she feels the membership benefits on a weekly basis. "Quite often someone from out of town will call the chamber, and the chamber will refer them to my business. Being a member gives you a feeling that you have an ownership in this town," said Tyler.
The chamber was started in 1917. Members of the chamber are from all over the county, and parts of Carroll and Holmes counties. There are an estimated 700 members.
Each year the chamber is responsible for community events such as Salute to Agriculture, Fourth of July Festival and the 300 Oaks Road Race.
