Firefighters responded to two grass fires within 10 minutes of each other Monday afternoon.
Fire Chief Larry Griggs said the fire department was expecting fires New Year's weekend because of dry conditions and the use of illegal fireworks. Two fires are about average, he said.
The first alarm came at 3:25 p.m. from 711 Robert E. Lee Drive. Firefighters used 100 gallons to extinguish the blaze which started in the rear of the house on the riverbank.
Griggs said the damage was fairly extensive, but no one was injured.
At 3:35 p.m., another call was received at 801 Cypress Ave. Firefighters used three grass brooms to put out the fire. Fireworks were found nearby.
The proximity of the calls is something firefighters plan for. Griggs said some days there will be no fires, then four calls all at once. "That's just the way it goes."
