Helping hands, both big and small, have pitched in to bring aid to evacuees.
Lacy Day Perry, 8, has raised $117.35 selling snow cones outside her house on Robert E. Lee Street.
"I was watching the hurricane news with my momma, and it made me kind of sad," Lacy said.
Over the past week, many of the thirsty passersby donated more than the 50 cents Lacy asked for the icy treats, her mother Trish Perry said.
Lacy has donated the money to the shelter at St. John's United Methodist Church.
Large organizations have efforts under way as well.
The Red Cross will provide aid only to evacuees today at the Leflore County Civic Center from noon until 5 p.m; and Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Evacuees can pick up clothing, bedding and furniture from the Salvation Army's thrift store on Carrollton Avenue.
"We don't have a lot, but whatever we have we'll give," said Capt. Patrick Lyons, director of Greenwood Salvation Army.
Leflore County families housing evacuees are eligible for rent and utility relief on a case-by-case basis as well, according to Lyons.
Interviews for assistance will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. starting Monday at 209 N. Stone St.
Applicants should bring identification proving they are residents of Leflore County, New Orleans or they live south of Hattiesburg.
By Tuesday, the Salvation Army will also have 10 laptop computers with Internet access.
Evacuees can use the computers to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, contact insurance companies and find loved ones, Lyons said.
