Voters will go to the polls to cast ballots Tuesday in a special election for Ward 6 city councilman in Greenwood.
The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. at the Jodie Wilson Library on Martin Luther King Drive.
The election will see incumbent David Jordan, a Democrat and president of the Greenwood City Council, challenged by George Ellis Jr., a Democrat.
Jordan, 71, has served as councilman for Ward 6 for more than two decades. He also is a state senator, representing Leflore County.
Jordan is also known for his role as president of the Greenwood Voters' League, a 40-year-old organization formed back during the civil rights era.
Ellis, a taxi driver, is retired from the automobile industry. He hasn't served in public office.
Ellis, 53, lived in Atlanta for most of his career but returned home several years ago to take care of his parents.
The special election is the result of a challenge of the June 2005 election, which saw Jordan re-elected. Ellis took the case to Leflore County Circuit Court, where a specially appointed judge called for an election.
Certified results of the June 7 election showed that Jordan received 214 votes compared to Ellis' 108 votes and Tavarris "T" Cross' 105 votes. The results gave Jordan a 50 percent plus one vote margin, which avoided a runoff between Jordan and Ellis.
The judge threw out one vote improperly counted in Jordan's column on a voting machine, which hadn't been cleared prior to the polls opening on election day.
