The schedule of River to the Rails is coming together quickly.
This is a big event set for May 5-6 in downtown Greenwood to bring people together to enjoy good music, good food and good times. The Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greenwood-Leflore Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Greenwood Inc. have joined together with other big sponsors to put on this second annual festival.
"I think this is so wonderful," said Suzy Gordon Johnson, director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
"You have the three big organizations working together to present this festival."
Everything kicks off from 6-11 p.m. May 5 with a street dance on Front Street. Curb Service will play at 7 p.m. and The Krackerjacks at 9 p.m. A beer garden sponsored by Budweiser and food vendors will be on the first block of Howard Street.
Then, May 6 is family day at the festival, extending from the Yazoo River at Front Street down to the rails.
The Paws Parade will kick off at 9 a.m. It'll start behind Regions bank, and the dogs will go down Howard Street and end with the Mr. and Mrs. Leflore County Humane Society contest for the best-dressed dog at the Local Performer's stage.
At 11 a.m. on the Main Stage, Greenwood will crown its Miss Hospitality. The deadline to enter is Saturday.
Kids will enjoy the Children's Corner, which includes train rides, a petting zoo, a three-on-three basketball contest, remote control racing cars, a hula-hoop contest, murals to paint, games and other goodies.
Some might want to slip away to the antique car show in the Port Eliot parking lot.
And there will be music planned for the stage by the river on Front Street. A tentative lineup includes the Terry Bean Band, Dove Grove, Little Dave, Under the Gun and Monkey Bone.
While music will come from the stage on Front Street, another stage of local performers will be set up next to the Blue Parrot Café and Veronica's bakery. Performances on this stage will start at 10 a.m., and some of the groups are the Greenwood Community Concert Band, Bankston Pizzazz, Expressions Dance Studio and Martha Geeslin Dance. Warehouse Gymnastics is also expected to perform.
And if that's not enough, the Greenwood-Leflore Chamber of Commerce will hold its Lawn and Garden Expo in conjunction with the festival. Plus art vendors, food vendors and the Taste of Greenwood Food Court will be there.
