Look out Southwestern Athletic Conference: Mississippi Valley State is for real.
The Delta Devils rallied in the fourth quarter for a 31-28 win over perennial SWAC powerhouse Southern University Saturday night in Itta Bena before 8.743 at Rice-Totten Stadium for its first victory over the Jaguars since 1991.
After last week's 31-17 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Valley's first season-opening win since 1996, the Delta Devils served notice that they were tired of being the doormat to the SWAC. For those who still doubted MVSU, they got the message Saturday, as did the Jaguars (0-1, 0-1 in the SWAC).
It's the first 2-0 start for Valley since opening the 1993 season with wins over Pine Bluff (20-6) and Lane College (36-22).
Valley is now 2-0 in the SWAC.
MVSU quarterback Aries Nelson completed 31-of-43 passes for 353 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 43 yards and a score.
Wide receiver Tyrone Timmons had 13 catches for 177 yards and a touchdown.
Valley finished with 451 total yards, compared to Southern's 417.
Valley will try to move to 3-0 in the SWAC next week at Alabama A&M.
