JACKSON - The state Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of Tyler Edmonds, who was 13 when sentenced to life for the shooting death of his half-sister's husband, rejecting claims that the teenager's confession was involuntary.
"I respectfully disagree with the court's decision and anticipate that we will be filing a motion to reconsider," attorney Robert McDuff, who represented Edmonds, said Tuesday after the court's decision.
Defense attorneys argued to the court in December that the trial judge should not have been "stingy" with the kind of evidence the jury was allowed to hear.
The defense contended that Edmonds, though bright, was susceptible to pressure to make a false confession. Edmonds was 13 when he was arrested in 2003.
He was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in 2004 in Oktibbeha County.
The teenager and his half-sister, Kristi Fulgham, were charged with killing Joseph T. "Joey" Fulgham, 28, at Joey Fulgham's home in May 2003.
