Services for longtime farmer Charles Harold Moor, 74, of Greenwood, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home.
Mr. Moor died unexpectedly of acute leukemia at Greenwood Leflore Hospital Friday, Dec. 7, 2001.
At the time of his death, Mr. Moor was actively farming land in Fort Loring Plantation, which has been in his family for generations. Mr. Moor's ancestors, the McLemore family, acquired the plantation land following the 1830 signing of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit, which ceded Choctaw land to the United States government.
Mr. Moor's great-grandfather, Col. John Dabney McLemore, is noted in Mississippi history as having been one of the largest and earliest landowners in the state.
"There are rumors that he owned anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 acres throughout the state," said Mr Moor's son, Richard, who lives in Jackson.
The plantation once contained a rail station, which Mr. Moor's grandfather allowed the Columbus & Greenville railroad to build in the 1920s.
A graduate of Greenwood High School, Mr. Moor studied agriculture at Mississippi State University. He finished there and served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War.
After returning from Korea, he began farming cotton, soybeans and rice on one-third of Fort Loring Plantation, which had been divided into three separately-owned tracts. He also taught agricultural courses to returning veterans for four years after the war.
Mr. Moor built his ownership to over 2,000 acres during his lifetime, buying a plantation in Quito and several parts of the McClain Plantation near Itta Bena. His son, John, is now running the Moor farm.
Mr. Moor was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and a life master in duplicate bridge.
Mr. Moor was preceded in death by a son, Charles Harold Moor Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Janie Logan Moor of Greenwood; three sons, Richard J. Moor of Jackson, John D. Moor of Greenwood and Joel "Jody" Moor of Indianola; two brothers, R.B. Moor and Marion Moor, both of Greenwood; and seven grandchildren.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
The Rev. Glenn Seefeld will officiate the services.
Pallbearers will be Stewart Fincher, T.U. Black III, Tim Timbs, Mark McDowell, David Farrish, Bob Patterson, David Morgan, Hud Billingsly, Dink Strain and Tony Anthony.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Henry Flautt, Dr. John F. Lucas Jr., W.C. Haynes and the local members of the Dixie Division.
