Actions speak louder than words. That's what Beulah Brown has always thought about her friend, Catherine Jones.
"People ask her for help all the time, and she never says no. She's always there for you," said Brown.
Jones, 79, has been in Greenwood since 1956, when she moved from her native Alabama. She taught for 29 years at T.Y. Fleming Elementary in Minter City.
She was married for 24 years before her husband passed away. She had one daughter, who died at age 22. Jones still checks up on her two grandchildren in college.
"She's real proud of her grandkids going to college. Mrs. Jones is always telling kids on the streets to make something of themselves. It hurts her to see people's lives thrown away. She is a good mentor for young people," said Brown.
Jones is a member and usher at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Greenwood. She also is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Brown personally felt Jones' kindness when she was in the hospital.
"I was taking care of my mother last year when I had to go to the hospital. I was in there for two weeks, and I didn't know who was taking care of my mother," said Brown.
"When I got home from the hospital, I found out that Mrs. Jones had been taking care of my mother the whole time," said Brown.
Jones is famous for her desserts, and known for her ability to listen.
"She's always been there. She's a good shoulder to cry on," said Brown.
"She's a great friend, and I love her. I appreciate all the work she's done over the years, and I know all the neighborhood does too," said Brown.
