The Leflore County Board of Supervisors approved a motion Friday to install a historical marker on Money Road in memory of blues legend Robert Johnson.
The targeted area for the marker is part of Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church property.
The Greenwood Blues Commission asked the church if they could put the marker on their property. The church wrote a letter asking that the marker be placed not on church grounds but on the highway leading to the entrance.
The church letter said that "The marker easement would be an honorable and definitely beautiful tribute to Robert Johnson, his music and also to the memories of Mr. Johnson" but members had decided against putting more blues-related objects on church grounds.
It is generally accepted that Johnson is buried in the Little Zion cemetery. Johnson's legend is that he made a deal with the Devil to trade his soul in exchange for becoming a great blues musician.
Hal Baggett of Willis Engineering said the marker needed to be 8 feet from the edge of the road and 5½ feet above the asphalt.
Also Friday, the board approved a motion for a $250 sponsorship for tonight's New Year's Eve party of the American Legion Post 200 at the Leflore County Civic Center.
Board members are also investigating the franchise tax distribution of Time Warner Cable. The county suspects the city may be getting some of the county's tax share.
Additionally, Chancery Clerk Sam Abraham said the county's new flood maps, drawn up by the Army Corps of Engineers, were still being reviewed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
