Thirty-five people gave blood in Greenwood Friday at a local drive, and more made appointments for future dates.
Tuesday's attacks in New York and Washington have spurred many Americans to give blood this week. Donations by Mississippians, if not needed for hospitals treating disaster victims, will stay in Mississippi. O-negative blood is the type most in demand.
Friday's drive, held from 1 to 6 p.m. at Greenwood Leflore Hospital's Flex building, was limited to 35 donors - some who give blood regularly, and others giving for the first time.
Mississippi Blood Services holds blood drives each Friday.
Those wanting to donate must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and complete a medical history questionnaire.
Anyone who gives blood should wait at least 56 days before giving again.
